Groomsbridge Stud, by Sally Forster

Groomsbridge stud came to fruition in 1992 when my then competition mare was retired. We felt that she earned the chance to be a broodmare having been sound all of her life and competed up to 1.35M level showjumping as well as competing in all other spheres. She was also a champion show horse both under saddle and in hand.

We later added my other mare to the broodmare band when she retired a year later again sound having competed week in week out.

These two mares one TB and one PB Hanoverian were the starting point and backbone to all of the stock that we own today including our successful young stallion Groomsbridge May I.

We now reside on a beautiful estate just south of Newmarket having started life in Leicestershire before moving to Devon for 8 years. In 1997 we bought our first stallion the TB Tout Ensemble who is by the infamous Shergar.

He was bought primarily for use on our own mares and taught us a huge amount even the beginnings of collecting and shipping semen. Our own stallion was a must as we had got to the point of not wanting to send mares away and although we AI’d mares at home as long ago as 1994 we were always struggling for choice.

Tout Ensemble fitted the bill perfectly for us as he had the most stunning temperament which he always passed on to his youngsters but had also produced advanced eventers which also seemed to have a bit of a talent for dressage.

In 1995 we used the very good TB stallion Makbul on our TB mare, he turned out to be an excellent choice as we ended up with our "now" stallion Groomsbridge May I who turned out to be everything I wanted.

Makbul although primarily a racing sire has thrown proven stock in all spheres that are known for the toughness and soundness.

May I had an excellent career in hand before being broken in where he again proved to be very straight forward. A couple of weeks short of his competition debut he had a paddock accident which resulted in a horrific spinal injury.

Anyone that knows this horse would be amazed to know that he looked like a hat rack after his accident as he is always chubby and we honestly thought he wouldn’t make a full recovery. But this horse is tougher than most and although he can no longer be ridden he does cover and even when his back is sore he will always come out and produce the goods for you.

It was this grit and his determination that convinced us that he deserved the chance to cover a few mares so two years after the initial accident we covered a friends mare to make sure he was able and fertile. In foal first time the resulting foal exceeded all expectations winning at nearly all shows entered. She makes her dressage debut soon and like her father has a great attitude to life.

Following this foal he covered a bigger book of mares with one of the resulting foals winning at the hunter show which wasn’t bad as the foal was a first foal out of a TB mare and by a small TB stallion.

He has become very popular for obvious reasons and now covers a restricted book of mares; we may even pull him from public stud in 2010 just so as not to overdo things.

May I is one of a very few small competition TB stallions that is out of a proven competition/show mare whose immediate family where also successful in the eventing /showjumping sphere.

Obviously as time has gone on we don’t now run as a hobby any more but we are a very diverse stud in that we don’t breed that many of our own stock, we only have 4 of our own homebred mares and we don’t breed with them every year.

We do have some nice youngstock about that will hopefully be sold and start ridden careers next year.

As well as May I we also own and stand the Sadlers Wells TB stallion High Tension. He was a winner on the flat but we bought him primarily to replace Tout Ensemble who we sadly lost in 2002 because of his temperament and bloodlines. He is an American bred and his dam sire is Fappiano who although primarily a racing stallion has the leading sire of eventers in the USA and also has three stallion sons prominent in the same lists.

High Tension is another laid back character which perhaps he catches from his stable mate as more often than not you can’t even tell that the two boys are there. High Tension also doubles as the stud’s teaser as he really doesn’t worry himself about that sort of thing at all which is very useful.

As the stud has expanded we have taken in boarders which include the Cremello stallion Milky Way and also at the moment Decoupage who is recovering from an injury.

We also have a number of boarding mares some of which are recipient mares for embryo transfer and I am looking forward to seeing the results from these.

The stud is busy as we also take stallions for dummy training and one that is due soon is the lovely coloured WB stallion Amour G who I am really looking forward to seeing.

The future will no doubt still be about using TB stallions in my breeding program as that is my big love and I hope that some of our babies will be out eventing very soon.
