The Billy Stud held their open day at neighbouring Jordan's Farm in Surrey on 6th April 2010. It was extremely well attended and special thanks have to go to Roger and his wife for being such welcoming and gracious hosts.

This photo essay is hopefully just a taster in advance of a full article from Donal, Pippa and William for next month’s issue. We were so impressed with the youngstock being produced and the absolute enthusiasm from Donal, who showed enormous knowledge of all the foals, their breeding and everything about them. Considering one member of the Horse Breeders Magazine team (who shall remain nameless – but it isn’t Caroline) finds it difficult to remember the grandsire of her youngstock it was awe inspiring!

The day began with a display of stallions and youngstock in the indoor school. It was not possible to take photos of them as the audience were in a pen in the middle and the horses cantering around the outside. It was an ingenious concept though and allowed everyone to see them, albeit whilst getting a tad dizzy.

The stallions shown on the day were Cevin Z, Billy JJ, Billy Congo and Billy Mexico (a chestnut son of Cevin Z). The stud currently have 2 foals due this year to the young Billy JJ but plan to utilise him much more this season as William says he has really grown into himself this year. Donal had taken Billy JJ to be gelded but withdrew him at the last minute, when already at the vets, when he jumped quite some distance by all accounts. Billy JJ seems happy with his reprieve and performed beautifully on the day.

Cevin Z had several offspring shown on the day, some about to be backed and some already under saddle. The vast majority of his babies are grey, with the exception on the day of Billy Mexico, and of similar stamp. The ones I saw were all powerful, eventing/modern showjumper type stamps with incredible scope.

Billy Congo also seems to produce youngsters very similar in type. They all have a similar head and fabulous hock movement. We saw Billy Pastime, a newly under saddle son of Billy Congo. We also saw some yearlings by Billy Congo though have no photos sadly as they obviously did not come out to the outdoor arena afterwards. They were all a compelling argument to use Billy Congo.

The day was made highly enjoyable, the banter between Pippa, William and Donal was extremely funny and entertaining and everyone involved was very willing to chat afterwards and the stallions were available to see in their stables. Though it was tough work for one gelding who just went to bed and fell asleep.

So please enjoy the photos and hopefully it will be followed by an exclusive interview by Caroline next month…..

Cevin Z (Coriall Z x Cathargo Z)

Cevin Z was very well ridden on the day by the young man who is now competing in "children on horses" with him. Huge thanks to him for putting on such a lovely display with this beautiful grey powerhouse

Billy Mexico (Cevin Z x Le Mexico)

Billy Mexico 2

Billy JJ (Animo x Clover Hill)

Along with Cevin Z Billy JJ was my favourite on the day. Ridden by Pippa Funnell and apologies for camera positioning!
